Emergency
Please visit A&E, your GP, or call 999 or 111 in any emergency.
Although rare, irritation, allergic reaction and infection can happen. This is usually from an allergy to ink. Or improper aftercare/ exposure to irritants. Signs of irritation/ infection include large swelling/ redness on tattooed area, fever/ high temperature, heat and itchiness on the tattoo area .
Tattoos are a wound to the skins surface so it’s normal for them to be slightly red/ slightly swollen. But this should subside 24-48 hours after the tattoo. If the swelling becomes progressively worse and painful at any point, please visit your gp/a&e. They can clean the tattoo area, issue topical steroid creams and in some cases, antibiotics.
